Mason immediately switched to the convoy’s backup radio channel.
“Control, this is Lead One. Confirm the commander’s location.”
A different voice answered.
“Lead One, the commander is at the front of the convoy.”
Mason looked at Trailer Nine again.
“So who just answered me?”
No reply.
The radio went silent.
The next morning, the convoy stopped at a secure inspection station.
Every truck was weighed before continuing.
Mason watched the digital display.
The sealed trailers weighed exactly what their paperwork showed.
But Trailer Nine…
The one supposedly empty…
Weighed almost 18,000 pounds.
He walked over to the operations manager.
“I thought this trailer was empty.”
The manager checked the screen.
Then smiled.
“Scale error.”
Mason had heard that excuse before.
He didn’t believe it.
A few miles later, the convoy pulled into a rest area for a scheduled driver change.
The young driver from the first day quietly approached Mason again.
“You were right.”
“About what?”
“Trailer Nine isn’t empty.”
Mason lowered his voice.
“Then what’s inside?”
The driver shook his head.
“I’ve never seen it.”
“But every time this route runs…”
“…one trailer always has a fake manifest.”
Before Mason could ask another question, two company supervisors walked toward them.
The young driver immediately stepped away.
That evening, the convoy reached its final destination.
Not a military base.
Not a warehouse.
A newly built data center surrounded by high security fencing.
As the gates opened, Mason finally saw the trailers being unloaded.
The sealed trucks contained ordinary electrical equipment.
Industrial generators.
Cooling systems.
Power transformers.
Then workers opened Trailer Nine.
Inside wasn’t people.
It wasn’t weapons.
It wasn’t cash.
It was row after row of high-capacity lithium battery modules packed inside shock-resistant racks.
The operations manager walked over.
“You’ve probably guessed why we kept it quiet.”
Mason nodded.
“Those batteries are worth a fortune.”
“More importantly,” the manager replied, “they’re the only backup power source for three regional hospitals while their emergency systems are being replaced.”
“The empty trailers?”
“They weren’t empty because we forgot to load them.”
He pointed across the convoy.
“They were decoys.”
“The route and truck positions kept changing so nobody outside the company could identify which trailer carried the critical shipment.”
Mason looked back at Trailer Nine.
“So the fake radio call…”
The manager’s expression changed.
“We didn’t make any fake radio call.”
Before either man could say another word, a security technician ran toward them holding a handheld radio.
“You need to hear this.”
He pressed Play.
The recording captured Mason’s transmission from the previous night.
Then came the mysterious reply.
But underneath the voice…
A faint burst of interference repeated every few seconds.
The technician frowned.
“Someone wasn’t pretending to be the commander.”
“They were transmitting through a signal repeater.”
He looked toward the hills overlooking the highway.
“Which means someone outside the convoy was listening to every radio conversation…”
“…and talking back.”
