Actor James Van Der Beek Passes Away at 48, Fans Mourn Dawson’s Creek Icon

James Van Der Beek, best known for his iconic role in the ’90s teen drama Dawson’s Creek, has died at the age of 48. The actor revealed in November 2024 that he had been diagnosed with bowel cancer while preparing to appear on the charity special The Real Full Monty. In a statement shared on his Instagram page on February 11, his family wrote: “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace.

We ask for privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”Following his diagnosis, Van Der Beek had auctioned memorabilia from his film and television career to help fund his treatment. A GoFundMe page later revealed the family faced significant financial strain during his illness while trying to provide the best possible care.

Van Der Beek rose to fame in 1998 as Dawson Leery, becoming one of television’s most recognizable young stars and earning a place on People magazine’s list of Most Beautiful People that same year. Reflecting on the show’s impact, he once wrote that his life changed “instantly” after years of hard work and perseverance.

He is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and their six children. His family has expressed gratitude for the support and kindness shown during this difficult time.
