NYPD Officer Killed In Midtown Shooting Was Expecting Third Child

NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, 36, was tragically shot and killed on Monday while performing a second job in Manhattan.
Islam, a father of two with a third child on the way, was engaged in private security duties while in uniform when he was shot in the back by a gunman wielding an M4 assault rifle near a midtown office building that accommodates the NFL and Blackstone.

Since joining the NYPD in 2021, Islam was recognized as a dedicated officer, father, and mentor. “He died as he lived: a hero,” remarked NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. Mayor Eric Adams commemorated Islam as a man of faith who “loved this city” and safeguarded others until his last moments.

The assailant, identified as Shane Tamura, 27, from Las Vegas, opened fire in the building’s lobby around 6:30 p.m., resulting in the deaths of four individuals, including Islam, before he took his own life. Eyewitnesses recounted a scene of chaos accompanied by the sound of rapid gunfire. Tamura, attired in business clothing, was equipped with a silencer-fitted rifle and seemed to aim at the upper floors of the building, which included Blackstone’s offices.

Authorities are probing whether the NFL or other organizations were targeted specifically. Footage captured police rushing into the building while attending to victims and securing the area.

Islam’s passing has profoundly affected his community. He served in the Bronx’s 47th precinct and guided young Bangladeshi men. “He aspired to leave a legacy for his family,” stated family friend Marjanul Karim.

The NYPD and city officials continue to grieve. “Every day he went out to provide for his family,” expressed Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry. Tributes have flooded in from fellow officers and local leaders, honoring Islam’s courage and sacrifice.

Investigations into the shooter’s motive and any potential connections are ongoing.
