The day my son brought home a stranger’s old watch from school and said, “Mom, my teacher said this belonged to Dad,”

I stared at the photograph until my vision became blurry. Jason and Daniel were standing together only one month before Jason died. For seven years, I believed my brother had disappeared from our lives long before my husband’s death. But the picture proved something impossible. They had been in contact. They had been working together. And someone had made sure I never knew. I looked at Evan, who was sitting quietly in the school office. He was too young to understand the weight of the secrets surrounding him. I forced a smile and placed the photograph in my bag. “We’re going home,” I said. On the drive back, Evan kept looking at me. “Mom, is Dad in trouble?” My heart broke. “No, sweetheart.” But I wasn’t sure if I was telling him the truth or just protecting him from it. That evening, I called Mrs. Turner. “I found the picture of Jason and Daniel.” There was a long pause. “Then you know.” “Know what?” I asked. Her voice became quiet. “That Jason never believed your brother abandoned you.” I sat down slowly. “What did he believe?” She answered, “That Daniel was trying to expose someone.” I looked at the photograph again. “Who?” She sighed. “The same person who wanted Jason to stop asking questions.” I needed answers, so I opened Jason’s old investigation files again. This time, I searched every name connected to Daniel’s disappearance. I found something hidden inside a police report. A witness statement. The witness claimed Daniel was last seen meeting someone at an abandoned warehouse. The witness’s name was removed. But underneath the blacked-out section, I could still see part of the signature. It started with an R. I froze. The next morning, I went to the police station where Jason worked. Many officers had retired, but one person was still there. Captain Robert Hayes. He was Jason’s supervisor. He was also the man who stood beside me at Jason’s funeral and told me my husband was a hero. When I entered his office, he immediately looked uncomfortable. “Rachel Collins,” he said. “I was wondering when you would come.” My stomach tightened. “Why would you wonder that?” He looked at the photograph in my hand. “Because Jason left behind questions.” I stepped closer. “You knew about Daniel.” His face changed slightly. “Everyone knew Daniel was trouble.” “My brother wasn’t trouble.” Captain Hayes looked away. “Rachel, your husband found something he shouldn’t have found.” “What?” He opened a drawer and removed an old file. “This.” Inside were reports about stolen evidence, missing case files, and financial records. My hands tightened around the papers. “Who was involved?” He didn’t answer. “Captain.” He looked at me. “Your husband thought someone inside the department was selling information.” My heart raced. “Who?” Before he could respond, his assistant knocked on the door. “Captain, you need to see this.” He handed him a folder. Captain Hayes opened it and immediately looked worried. “Where did this come from?” “It was left outside the station.” He looked at me. “It has your name on it.” I felt a cold wave move through me. Inside the folder was a copy of Jason’s final investigation report. But someone had added a handwritten note at the bottom. “Rachel knows too much now.” I looked at Captain Hayes. “Who wrote this?” He didn’t answer. That was when I noticed something. The handwriting looked familiar. Too familiar. It looked like Jason’s. I took the page home and compared it with old birthday cards and letters from my husband. The writing matched. My hands shook. How could Jason have written a warning after he died? That night, I couldn’t sleep. Around midnight, I heard something outside Evan’s room. I quietly walked down the hallway. Someone was inside. I grabbed my phone and turned on the light. Nobody was there. But on Evan’s desk was a small black box. I opened it carefully. Inside was Jason’s police badge. The same badge that was placed in his memorial case after his funeral. Beneath it was a note. “You are looking for the wrong person.” My heart pounded. Then my phone buzzed. An unknown number sent a message. “Meet me if you want to know why Jason really died.” A location appeared. It was an old restaurant outside town. I didn’t tell anyone. I knew I was taking a risk, but I needed the truth. When I arrived, I saw a man sitting alone in the corner. I almost walked away because I recognized him. It was Daniel. My missing brother. The person everyone said abandoned us. He looked older, tired, and afraid. When he saw me, tears filled his eyes. “Rachel.” I couldn’t move. “You’re alive.” He nodded. “Yes.” My voice broke. “Why did you leave?” He looked down. “Because Jason made me promise.” I froze. “Why would Jason ask you to disappear?” Daniel took a small envelope from his pocket and placed it on the table. “Because the person who killed Jason was looking for me.” I opened my mouth, but no words came out. Daniel pushed the envelope toward me. “Inside is the proof.” My hands trembled as I opened it. There was one photograph. One document. And one name. The name of the person who had been protecting our family for years. I looked at Daniel in horror. “No.” He nodded sadly. “Rachel, I wish it wasn’t true.” I stared at the name again. Because the person responsible for Jason’s death was the same person who had raised Evan like their own child.
