The moment my daughter came home from school carrying a painting of our family with one person erased from it,

I stared at the drawing in my hands, unable to accept what I was seeing. The woman who had been appearing in my daughter’s drawings, the woman who claimed to know where Rachel had been, was not a stranger. She was my neighbor, Linda Harris. For five years, Linda had lived two houses away from me. She baked cookies for Mia, helped when I worked late, and attended every neighborhood gathering. She was the person I trusted enough to leave my daughter with in emergencies. My hands started shaking. How could she know anything about Rachel? I looked at Chris. “Did you know?” He looked away. That was enough. “Chris.” His shoulders dropped. “Yes.” I felt betrayed. “You knew Linda was connected to Rachel?” He slowly nodded. “I knew she knew something.” “And you said nothing?” He looked at me with regret. “Because Rachel made me promise.” I laughed bitterly. “Everyone keeps making promises while I’m the last person to know my own life.” The next morning, I went straight to Linda’s house. I didn’t knock politely. I needed answers. When she opened the door and saw my face, she already knew why I was there. “You found the letter,” she said quietly. My heart sank. “Who are you really?” Linda looked tired, like she had been waiting years for this moment. “Someone who failed your sister.” I stepped inside. “Where is Rachel?” Linda closed the door slowly. “Before I tell you, you need to understand something. Rachel didn’t disappear because she wanted to leave.” “Then why?” Linda looked at the old family photo on her wall. “Because she discovered something about your parents.” My chest tightened. “My parents?” She nodded. “Your father was hiding financial problems. But the money wasn’t the biggest secret.” “What was?” Linda hesitated. “Your family was involved in something that put Rachel in danger.” I stared at her. “What does that mean?” Linda walked to a cabinet and pulled out a small metal box. Inside were dozens of letters. All from Rachel. The dates continued for years after she vanished. “She wrote to me because she was afraid to contact you directly.” My eyes filled with tears. “Why?” Linda handed me the first letter. “Because she believed someone was watching you.” I opened it. Rachel’s handwriting appeared on the page. “Laura, I miss you every day. But if I come back too soon, they will use me to hurt you.” My hands trembled. “Who are they?” Linda looked away. “That’s what Rachel spent years trying to find out.” I turned the page. The letter mentioned a company called Bennett Foundation. My family name. I remembered it. My father created the foundation years ago. Everyone praised him for helping struggling families. “What did my father do?” I asked. Linda’s voice became quiet. “He wasn’t helping everyone.” She opened another file. Inside were financial records. Money transfers. Hidden accounts. Names of people I recognized from my hometown. My stomach turned. “Rachel found this?” Linda nodded. “She discovered the foundation was being used to hide stolen money.” I looked at the documents. “And my father knew?” “Yes.” I felt sick. My father had always been my hero. The man everyone respected. But the evidence in front of me showed another side. Then I noticed one name repeated in the records. Christopher Bennett. My husband’s name. I looked at Linda. “Why is Chris’s name here?” Her expression changed. “Because that is the part Rachel was trying to understand.” My heart started racing. “What part?” Linda reached into the box and pulled out a small audio recorder. “Rachel recorded this before she disappeared.” I pressed play. Static filled the room. Then I heard Rachel’s voice. “If Laura finds this, it means I failed.” My eyes filled with tears hearing my sister again. Rachel continued. “I found out the person helping Dad wasn’t who I thought.” A man’s voice interrupted. “You should have stayed quiet.” My body froze. I knew that voice. Linda looked at me. She knew I recognized it. The recording continued. Rachel whispered, “I trusted you.” The man replied, “That was your mistake.” The audio ended. I looked at Linda. “Who was it?” She didn’t answer. “You know.” My heart refused to believe it. I walked home feeling like my entire life was collapsing. When I arrived, Chris was waiting outside. “Laura, please let me explain.” I stepped back. “Were you involved?” His face became pale. “Not the way you think.” “Then tell me the truth.” He looked down. “I knew about your father’s business.” My voice broke. “And Rachel?” He closed his eyes. “I tried to help her.” “But?” He swallowed. “But I was too late.” I wanted to scream. Instead, I asked the question that had haunted me for years. “Is Rachel alive?” Chris looked at me with tears in his eyes. “Yes.” My heart stopped. “Where is she?” Before he could answer, my phone rang. It was an unknown number. I answered. No one spoke for several seconds. Then a woman whispered my name. “Laura.” I froze. I knew that voice. I hadn’t heard it in fifteen years. “Rachel?” I whispered. Tears filled my eyes. “You’re alive?” My sister’s voice cracked. “I’m sorry I waited so long.” I held the phone tightly. “Where are you?” There was silence. Then Rachel said, “I’m close.” My heart raced. “Why didn’t you come home?” Her voice became full of fear. “Because the person who made me disappear is still watching you.” I looked around my house. “Who?” Rachel whispered one sentence that made my blood run cold. “Laura… it’s the person standing behind you right now.”
